Hemingway Didn’t Say That – Garson O’Toole

Kindle Version: 2/5 Quotation Marks

What is it about?

Garson O’Toole aims to find out who actually said some of the popular quotations that have been erroneously assigned to popular speakers such as Mark Twain, Yogi Berra, Marilyn Monroe, Albert Einstein, and oh yeah, Hemingway.

Was it good?

I like good quotations, but this is not the book for me. I felt that the organization and execution took away from the purpose of the book. I couldn’t remember any of the names of the errors of attribution, and I certainly can’t remember who said what.

Each quote has an extensive history and what feels like a list of everyone who ever said anything remotely close to the quote. This left me feeling bored by the repetitive text, and confused about who actually was the originator of the quote.

    1. It was a little difficult. At least each quote is it’s own small section so it was easy to just read a couple every now and then… I actually reminded myself what you said about trying to finish every book so I didn’t quit!
