A quick rant about footnotes

I am currently reading Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff. This bothered me in Nevernight, too.

I just finished “book 1” and I feel frustrated! Book 1 is a mashup of 3 different stories:

4 months ago, (pretty interesting)

What’s happening now, (very interesting)

and an irrelevant though sometimes amusing history of the world, aka the Footnotes. (SOOOO DISTRACTING)

It’s really the footnotes that bother me. Footnotes are supposed to clarify or reference, not tell stories of their own. When the footnotes are 1, 2, or 3 pages long it just tears me out of the story and refuses to let me fall in love with it.

It’s like trying to read in public and there is this annoying person who knows more about everything that keeps jumping in to interrupt your reading with facts that may or may not pertain to the story. I JUST WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT’s GOING TO HAPPEN IN THE STORY!

Thank you for reading.
