Hello, fellow readers!
I haven’t written in a while because my husband took me on a 7 day cruise to the Caribbean. The best part was that we dropped the kids off at my mom’s house in Dallas, so we had all the time in the world to Eat, Sleep, and Read (watch movies, in my husband’s case).
It’s been a really long time since I’ve had more than an hour or two to sit and read at a time, and I found myself struggling to stay focused. I might even say that I was a little bored. This causes me to question everything I ever believed in, but I think I know what the problem was.
- I’m pregnant, so it is physically uncomfortable for me to sit in the same position for a long time.
- I need to read a variety of books, not just fantasy, in order to keep my interest high.
Below is a long list of books I received during the holidays, so that I may have happy reading all the way into the new year!
1 Week before Christmas, my true love gave to me….. 5 books I’ve been waiting for!
Crown of Midnight – Throne of Glass Book 2 – Sarah J. Maas
4/5 This was a very nice continuation in the Throne of Glass story. I think I would have given it 5/5 if it hadn’t been ruined for me by accidentally reading a review for one of the later stories in the series.
Red Queen – Red Queen #1 – Victoria Aveyard
5/5 I enjoyed this story very much, although it did remind me of Red Rising a bit. I am eager to continue the story and learn what happens next.
The Palace Job – Patrick Weeks
I haven’t read this. All I know is that this is supposed to be quite the hilarious heist story.
The Lightning Thief – Percy Jackson #1 – Rick Riordan
I didn’t read this as a kid, but it’s a pretty popular series so I thought it’s about time I give it a try.
Tithe – Holly Black
I’m very excited to read this. I don’t remember what it’s about, but it involves fairies and fairy tales.
All thoughout Christmas my Local library gave to me…. too many books to read!
You know how you put a bunch of holds at the library and you hope they trickle in slowly… but they never do.
Ancillary Mercy – Imperial Ranch #3 – Ann Leckie
I am currently reading this to take a break from the fantastic fantasy or dystopian worlds. I REALLY loved books 1 and 2. This is a great futuristic society. The main character is an AI that was nearly destroyed by the ruler of the main society and therefore seeks revenge.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy – John Le Carre
3/5 This book was okay, but I found it pretty confusing. It’s a spy novel written in the 80’s and is about a retired spy being asked to secretly determine if there is a mole in the service. There’s a lot of aliases that make keeping track of people difficult, and it was also difficult to tell memories from current events.
Modern Romance – Aziz Ansari
My current audiobook. Comedian Aziz delivers a well researched look at how the dating scene has changed with the advent of new technologies such as dating sites and smart phones. I’m glad I got the Audiobook because Aziz reads it himself and adds some funny commentary.
The Witch’s Vacuum Cleaner – Terry Pratchett
A book of short stories. I was listening to the audiobook and didn’t finish it in time. I re-requested it and now I’m hoping I have time to finish it.
Cress – The Lunar Chronicles #3 – Marissa Meyer
This is the series that began with Cinder, a cyborg living in a dystopian world that looks down upon Cyborgs. Each book in the series has some resemblance to a common fairy tale. (Cinder = Cinderella)
Wonder Woman – Warbringer – Leigh Bardugo
A wonder woman story written by the author of Six of Crows? Yes, please!! By the way, if you haven’t read the Six of Crows series, you are missing out on a wonderful heist story. I loved those books with my whole heart.
A Darker Shade of Magic – V.E. Schwab
A magician/multiple dimensions story taking place in London. I requested the audiobook version, but now I’m afraid I won’t be able to finish it in the 3 week period.
A Crown of Midnight
(Same as above) I waited 2 months for you, but my husband beat you to it!!
I hope that everyone had a reason to smile this holiday season… I know I did!
