What is it about?
Part legal thriller, part story about how your family can help or hurt you when overcoming tragedy.
Samantha and Charlotte (Sam and Charlie) are sisters who have survived the worst. 28 years ago, 2 men came to their backdoor with a shotgun, a revolver, and bad intentions. Today, Charlie is a witness in a school shooting. The shooting stirs up memories buried long ago, but never forgotten.
Was it good?
This book was brilliant. It was really horrifying and intriguing. The relationships make so much sense, and I felt really attached to all of the characters. The mystery had me guessing until 4 seconds before the big reveal. I honestly think that if it was handled well, it would make a really good movie because it’s such a strong story.
Karin Slaughter provides just enough details to paint a clear picture, but leaves the worst of it to your own imagination.
If you like mystery/legal/crime/family dynamics, I would really recommend this book.
Bonus
I complained a few posts ago about an unrealistic cat in a story. The cat in this story is not a main character and definitely acts like most cats I have ever known. Lying in patches of sunlight, and bumping their wet nose against you when they want to be pet. The cat helped round out the character, rather than distract from it.
