The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn #1)

Amazon | Goodreads

Fantasy Series (1 of 6)

“I bring you a message from a friend of ours,” she said quietly. “He wanted you to know that he’s not dead. He can’t be killed. He is hope.”

What is it about?

This is a heist story that is actually a save the world story. As Goodreads will tell you, the people have been oppressed and forced into slavery for a thousand years and no one has been able to make a significant difference in all that time. The world is desolate and dying, with smoky skies and ash falling down like rain. At night, the mists swirl and hide everything. The Lord Ruler is believed to be a piece of God and he makes sure the nobles and skaa remain separated. For the nobles have magic allomancy, whereas the skaa slaves do not.

Was it good?

For the first 2/3 of the book I thought, “this is interesting, this is good,” and then…

And then, I found myself gripping my Kindle so hard that my fingers hurt. I thought about this story ALL DAY LONG, and when I finally finished it, I just hugged my Kindle to my chest and sat with the feeling for a while.

  • The characters felt like real people.
  • The world building was believable and complete.
  • The magic system was fully explained, unique, and exciting.
  • The story was brilliantly told.

The Series:

  1. The Final Empire – 5/5
  2. The Well of Ascension
  3. The Hero of Ages
  4. The Alloy of Law (takes place 300 years after HoA)
  5. Shadows of Self
  6. The Bands of Mourning

According to goodreads there may be a book 7, but I didn’t see any info for this on Brandon Sanderson’s personal website.

Have you read this series?

Please talk to me about this book, I need an outlet for this feeling. You know the feeling: The book was beautiful, and the world is beautiful… but what if nothing will ever be so beautiful again?

      1. The main Easter egg I know of is the old man named Hoid that shows up in almost every series. I think the Mistborn books may be my favorite. It’s hard to say. I really love the Stormlight Archive books, but they’re still ongoing so idk how I’ll feel about the series as a whole yet.
