Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have a new favorite book! I loved this book so much I read it twice. Never in my life have I read a book two times in a row, excluding books that I read to my kids, of course.

First, I listened to the audiobook. It was so good that I doubled my dog walk from 1 mile to 2 miles, and I even stuck with my resolution to shave my legs before I shower to conserve water. It was so good that it had me laughing and several times I had tears in my eyes.

The audiobook is read by a full cast, which helps bring the whole story to life. I loved it!

Then, when I took my 5-year-old to Half Price Books we saw that they had book 1 and 3 for less than $6 each. And that is when I saw how PRETTY the books are.

These books are not your conventional words on paper books. Each page is carefully designed to emphasize the story. There is lots of contrast and many surprises. I had to buy them, and I had to re-read the book right away to see if I missed anything. And I did!

I loved the audiobook experience, but the physical book was filled with treats for my eyes and surprises (like the name of the Phobo’s test subject which made me squeal with glee and interrupt my husband’s football watching to tell him. I then had to explain who it was because he didn’t recognize the name.)

I forgot to mention what this book is about. It’s about a survivor of an attack on a mining colony. They get rescued by a military ship that was nearby but all the ships are badly damaged in the escape. As they are being chased by the enemy the military seems to be hiding things from the passengers…like an insane AI and deadly virus. Kady Grant uses her computer skills to try and find out what’s happening….

Definitely give this book a read!
