I listened to the audiobook for this. I enjoyed the story, the atmosphere, and the romance.
Caraval is kind of like a traveling circus whose magic is real and centers around a mystery that needs to be solved. Scarlet has hoped for Caraval to come to her town for years and years, and only when she is about to be married does she receive and invitation to attend. To get there, her and her sister must escape their abusive father, and once they get there…. they must survive.
This book is twisty and surprising. I was sure I knew who Legend (the boss of Caraval) was but then I started to doubt myself and then I was really confused, and even the ending surprised me.
The atmosphere was really fascinating and the design of the game and mystery was very interesting. And the romantic moments were gorgeous.
I enjoyed the book and I would like to continue the series to find out what happens next.
Side note: There are some similarities between this book and the Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. The audiobook narrator was the same for that series and this one, which heightened my realization that two of the character names matched: Scarlet and Iko. This worried me at first, but the stories turned out to be quite different from each other, and both of them are very enjoyable.
